If you’re into trivia, you might have noticed a couple games on the market that promote themselves as Baby Boomer Games. One is Boom Again. The other is the OK Boomer game.
You may be curious about which one is right for you, or for your Baby Boomer parent. Here’s a rundown of the two games to help you understand what each has to offer, and hopefully whet your appetite for some trivia.
So what’s the difference, you ask?
Boom Again was developed by Baby Boomers for Baby Boomers. Sure, the younger generations—from Gen Z to Millennials to everybody in-between—can play along, but it specifically aims to be a nostalgic visit back to 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s.
In other words, Boom Again is a celebration of all things Baby Boom. The music. The movies. The crazy fashions. The things Boomers learned in school, and the things picked up on the streets.
On the other hand, the OK Boomer game is more a face-off between the generations. The game claims to “level the playing field for different generations to compete against each other in a new-age take on classic style trivia.” However, the multi-generational aspect of the game tends to encourage making-fun-of-Boomers’ unfamiliarity with younger generation’s trivia.
To say it another way, it’s not a trivia game about the Baby Boom era. It’s a trivia game with some questions about the Baby Boom. In fact, the name “OK Boomer” is actually a slogan used to make fun of Baby Boomers (a reference to how, when someone acts “old” or out of touch, you say to them “Okay, Boomer” to let them know they need to get with the times).
In Boom Again, players answer questions in six categories. They are, “Things We Heard” (music, TV commercial jingles, etc.), “Things We Saw” (movies, TV shows), “Stuff We Learned on the Street,” “Things We Learned in School,” “In the News” and a special category called “Shout” a multi-answer category filled with laughs and singing. The questions all focus on the Baby Boom era.
The OK Boomer game also has specific categories. However, its categories are split into five different generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, Baby Boomer, & The Silent Generation. The goal of the game is to collect one card from each generation category to win. For OK Boomer, anything goes as far as the years it spans—Boomer may be in the title, but it’s not the focus of the game.
Boom Again features more than 2,200 pop culture trivia questions intended to tickle a Boomer’s memories. They aren’t designed to be for “brainiacs” only. In fact, if you’re a Baby Boomer, “you’ve already lived the answers.”
OK Boomer has 550 total question – but only 110 of them are focused on the Baby Boom. The other 440 trivia questions are divided up between other generations.
For Boom Again you don’t need to have buried your nose in a set of Encyclopedias. If you watched TV and went to the movies growing up, sang along to the radio, paid at least a little attention in school—or just remember what it was like back in the day—you’re already fully prepped. A glimpse at typical questions from each reveals a lot of what players can expect:
From Boom Again: How many times does K.C. and the Sunshine Band sing the word “shake” before they sing “your booty?”
From the Baby Boom questions in OK Boomer: “What waterproof, breathable fabric was invented in 1976 to use in space but is commonly used today in clothing like jackets and boots?”
If we were in the trivia Olympics, Boom Again would be a team sport and OK Boomer an individual sport.
That’s because Boom Again is played in two teams—so if you have four people playing, it’s two teams of two. If you have 10 people playing, it’s two teams of five. When a question comes up even a partial memory from one team member can trigger the full and correct answer from their teammates. The game is designed to drive social interactions.
The OK Boomer game is played as individuals. Instead of a winning team, there’s a winning player.
So whatever your age and interests, get out there and wow ‘em with your wonderfully random knowledge. And if you are a Baby Boomer, or are just buying a gift for one, both these games have something to offer.
